I am making a new version of the Tao Te Ching. There are so many varying translations out there that I want to make sense out of. I don't know Chinese but it will be based on 8 translations. My methodology is threefold: (1) to use the most common interpretations, (2) to go with the understandings that make the most contextual sense, (3) and to intuit the original meaning by weighing the spiritual value of available translation options. The last aspect might seem unscholarly but, judging from the translations, the text is very much open to the aesthetic predilections of the translator. I have no idea when I will finish this project.
